CONSTRUCTING A PADDING BAG FOR M-BENZ CABRIOLETS

  1. THE HEADLINER MUST BE INSTALLED PRIOR TO RE-FITTING THE PADDING BAG. BOW HEIGHT SUITABLE FOR THE TOP TO BE INSTALLED, WITH ALL STRAPS IN POSITION FOR THE REAR BOW TO BODY LINE.

  2. USING A FIRM MATERIAL SUCH AS MUSLIN OR BOW LISTING TO MATCH THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TOP, CUT (2) 72" LENGTHS & JOIN BY  SEWING THE 72" LENGTHS TOGETHER. THIS MATERIAL WILL BE EXPOSED TO HEAT & HUMIDITY SO USE A DURABLE MATERIAL WHICH WILL NOT SHRINK OR ROT.

  3. STAPLE AT THE FRONT EDGE CENTER, LEAVING 6" EXCESS.

  4. STAPLE AT THE REAR DEAD CENTER, LEAVING EXCESS.

  5. PULL TO SIDES & STAPLE THE 2 FRONT CORNERS, 2 REAR CORNERS PULLING TAUT. LEAVE APPROX. 1" SPACE BETWEEN THE SIDE RAIL OF THE FRAME & THE MATERIAL WHEN FOLDED BACK.

  6. FASTEN AS ORIGINAL BY USING BLIND RIVETS AT THE END OF EACH THE BOWS. ( MALE BLIND RIVETS MUST BE MOUNTED THROUGH HEADLINING LISTING SLEEVE FIRST.)

  7. USING MATERIAL OR LEATHER AS A REINFORCEMENT, HAMMER FEMALE RIVET END DOWN.

  8. HAND SEW, USING A WHIP STITCH OR SIMILAR TO FASTEN CENTERS OF BAG TO THE BOWS.

  9. BE SURE THE ELASTIC STRAP ON EITHER SIDE OF THE HINGED FORWARD BOW HAS BEEN REPLACED TO PULL THIS BOW BACKWARDS WHEN FOLDING DOWN. IF THERE IS NO ELASTIC THE ALUMINUM BOW MAY GET BENT OR BROKEN.

  10. INSTALL ANY ADDITIONAL BURLAP OR NYLON WEBBING ACTING AS SUPPORT BETWEEN THE BOWS INSIDE THIS BAG.

  11. 1" DACRON FIBERFILL IS A GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ORIGINAL EXCELSIOR/HORSEHAIR. STAPLE THIS MATERIAL ACROSS THE FRONT & REAR EDGES.  TRIM EXCESS. (ORIGINAL MATERIAL WAS WHIP STITCHED LIGHTLY IN PLACE TO PREVENT BUNCHING WHEN FOLDING THE FRAME DOWN.)

  12. PULL THE BAG CLOSED & WHIP STITCH THE CENTER.

  13. PULL THE TOP OVER THE FRAME & DO A 6 POINT TACK - 2 FRONT CORNERS, 2 REAR BOW CORNERS, 2 LOWER QUARTER CORNERS. CHECK FOR FIT & MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE PADDING AS NECESSARY, USING A THIN LAYER OF FIBERFILL OR FELT.

  14. FINISH FASTENING THE BAG CLOSED.  TRIM THE BOTTOM LAYER OF THE MATERIAL. FILL ALONG FRONT EDGE WITH 1/8" FELT & PULL EXCESS UPPER LAYER OF MATERIAL ON FRONT EDGE TIGHTLY OVER THE FRONT LIP & GLUE. TRIM EXCESS FRONT & REAR.

IF THE CONVERTIBLE HAS PADDED SIDE QUARTERS -

  1. TACK A LAYER OF MATERIAL TO THE SIDE TACKING WOOD & PULL AROUND THE SIDE TO EITHER THE QUARTER STRAP HOLDING THE REAR BOW IN POSITION OR TO THE METAL WINDOW FRAME IN THE DEAD CENTER REAR WINDOW AREA. ( FOR MODELS WITH A REMOVABLE GLASS REAR WINDOW )

  2. USE EITHER A ½"-3/4" DACRON FIBERFILL OR SIMILAR MATERIAL TO PADS QUARTERS. COVER WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL TO CREATE THE QUARTER BAG.

  3. WHIP STITCH CLOSED TO UPPER PADDING BAG & STAPLE TO SIDE QUARTER TACKING WOOD.

  4. STAPLE OR POP RIVET, DEPENDING UPON MODEL, AT THE LOWER BODY LINE
